Through a combination of archives and interviews, director Davide Ferrario offers a fascinating insight into the world as seen and thought by Italian author Umberto Eco (1932-2016), who takes us on a tour of his personal 30,000 books collection, a place that embodies not only culture and literature, but also a symbol of universal memory. Umberto Eco: A Library of the World is, ultimately, a powerful testimony of the importance of literature in our society.

FR. En combinant archives et interviews, le réalisateur Davide Ferrario propose une fascinante immersion dans le monde tel qu’il est vu et pensé par l’auteur italien Umberto Eco (1932-2016). Ce dernier nous fait découvrir sa librairie personnelle et ses quelques 30000 ouvrages, un lieu qui incarne plus qu’un espace de culture et de littérature mais un symbole de mémoire universelle. Umberto Eco : A Library of the World est, finalement, un témoignage fort de l’importance de la littérature dans notre société.

Film Director

Davide Ferrario. Born in Italy in 1956. He graduated in American Literature at the Milan University in 1981. He began as a film critic in the 70’s and funded a distribution company who released in Italy films by Wenders, Fassbinder, Wajda. Later, he became Italian agent for American independents such as John Sayles and Jim Jarmusch.
His debut as a director was La fine della notte, 1989, voted Best Italian Independent Film of the year. Since then he has directed fiction films and documentaries shown in international festivals like Berlin, Sundance, Venice, Toronto, Locarno. Ferrario holds a peculiar place in the Italian scene. Sternly independent, he runs his own production company, Rossofuoco, with which he has produced all his movies since 2002. Among them, Dopo mezzanotte (After Midnight), a great success at the Berlinale and sold to over 100 countries; and the documentary La strada di Levi (Primo Levi’s Journey), long-listed for the Academy Award. His most recent direction is Blood on the Crown, starring Harvey Keitel and Malcolm McDowell.
Ferrario is also a novelist and a regular contributor to Corriere della Sera.

Davide Ferrario est né en Italie en 1956. Il est diplômé en littérature américaine de l’Université de Milan en 1981. Il a commencé comme critique de cinéma dans les années 70 et a financé une société de distribution en Italie des films de Wenders, Fassbinder, Wajda.
Par la suite, il est devenu l’agent italien de cinéastes indépendants américains tels que John Sayles et Jim Jarmusch.
Il a fait ses débuts en tant que réalisateur avec La fine della notte, 1989, élu meilleur film indépendant italien de l’année. Depuis, il a réalisé des films de fiction et des documentaires présentés dans des festivals internationaux tels que Berlin, Sundance, Venise, Toronto et Locarno. Ferrario occupe une place particulière sur la scène italienne. Résolument indépendant, il dirige sa propre société de production, Rossofuoco, avec laquelle il a produit tous ses films depuis 2002. Parmi eux, Dopo mezzanotte / Après minuit, grand succès à la Berlinale et vendu dans plus de 100 pays, et le documentaire La strada di Levi / Le voyage de Primo Levi, sélectionné pour les Oscars. Sa dernière réalisation est Blood on the Crown, avec Harvey Keitel et Malcolm McDowell.
Ferrario est également romancier et collabore régulièrement au Corriere della Sera.

دافيد فيراريو وُلد في إيطاليا في العام 1956 وتخرج في الأدب الأميركي من جامعة ميلانو في العام 1981. بدأ عمله ناقداً سينمائياً في السبعينات وموّل في إيطاليا شركة توزيع أفلام فيندرز وفاسبيندر وفايدا.
وبعد ذلك، أصبح الوكيل الإيطالي لعدد من صانعي الأفلام الأمريكيين المستقلين مثل جون سايلز وجيم جارموش.
ولقد شق بداياته في عالم الإخراج مع فيلم آخر الليل في العام 1989، حاصداً معه جائزة أفضل فيلم إيطالي مستقل لذلك العام. ومنذ ذلك الحين، بدأ بإخراج أفلام خيالية ووثائقية عُرضت في مهرجانات دولية مثل برلين وصندانس والبندقية وتورونتو ولوكارنو. يحتل فيراريو مكانة خاصة على الساحة الإيطالية. وهو مستقل تمامًا في عمله، إذ يدير شركة الإنتاج الخاصة به، روسوفووكو، التي أنتج معها جميع أفلامه منذ العام 2002. من بينها بعد منتصف الليل الذي حقق نجاحًا كبيرًا في مهرجان برلين السينمائي الدولي وبيع في أكثر من 100 دولة، والفيلم الوثائقي رحلة بريمو ليفي الذي اختير لجوائز الأوسكار. أحدث إنتاجاته هو فيلم دماءٌ على العرش، مع هارفي كيتل ومالكولم ماكدويل.

Rabih Haddad was born in 1961. He is a writer, academic and communications consultant. He teaches cinema and politics, political communication and the memory of war at Saint-Joseph University in Beirut. He runs a string of film clubs. Rabih Haddad holds a master’s degree in modern literature from the USJ in Beirut, an audio-visual director’s diploma from the Conservatoire du Cinéma français and a diploma in art history from the Ecole du Louvre in Paris.

Rabih Haddad, né en 1961, est auteur, universitaire et consultant en communication. Il enseigne Le Cinéma et la Politique, La Communication Politique et La Mémoire de la Guerre à l’Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth. Il anime de nombreux cinéclubs. Rabih Haddad est détenteur d’une maîtrise en Lettres modernes de l’USJ de Beyrouth, d’un diplôme de réalisateur audio-visuel de Conservatoire du Cinéma français et d’un diplôme d’Histoire de l’Art de l’Ecole du Louvre à Paris. 

ربيع حداد، من مواليد ١٩٦١، كاتب وأكاديميّ ومستشار إعلاميّ. يدرّس السينما والسياسة والتواصل السياسيّ وذاكرة الحرب في جامعة القديس يوسف في بيروت. يحيي العديد من نوادي السينما. ربيع حداد حائز على كفاءة في الأدب الحديث من جامعة القديس يوسف في بيروت، وشهادة مخرج سمعيّ بصريّ من المعهد الموسيقيّ للسينما الفرنسية، وشهادة في مجال تاريخ الفنّ من كلية لوفر في باريس.
