ENG. 2023 marked the thirtieth anniversary of the death of Maroun Baghdadi, an iconic director of Lebanese cinema. In Maroun Returns to Beirut, filmmaker Feyrouz Serhal embarks on a one-day journey through Beirut, visiting the places that shaped the life and work of Maroun Baghdadi. Along the way, Serhal meets his close friends and associates, gathers their personal memories, and interweaves archival footage with excerpts from his films. Maroun Returns to Beirut doesn’t just retrace Baghdadi’s career, as the documentary also portrays Lebanon, a portrait in which cinema mirrors the country’s historical, personal and collective narratives.

FR. L’année 2023 a marqué le trentième anniversaire de la disparition de Maroun Baghdadi, réalisateur emblématique du cinéma libanais. Dans Maroun Returns to Beirut, la cinéaste Feyrouz Serhal entame un voyage d’une journée à travers Beyrouth, parcourant les lieux qui ont façonné la vie et l’œuvre de Maroun Baghdadi. Au fil de ce périple, Serhal rencontre ses proches, ses collaborateurs, recueille leurs souvenirs personnels, tout en entrelaçant des images d’archives et des extraits de ses films. Maroun Returns to Beirut ne retrace pas uniquement la carrière de Baghdadi puisque le documentaire dresse aussi le portrait du Liban, un portrait dans lequel le cinéma est le miroir des récits historiques, personnels et collectifs du pays. 

يصادف عام 2023 الذكرى الثلاثين لوفاة مارون بغدادي، المخرج الذي يشكل أحد رموز السينما اللبنانية. تنطلق المخرجة فيروز سرحال في فيلمها وعاد مارون إلى بيروت في رحلةٍ على مدار يومٍ كاملِ في بيروت، لتزور الأماكن التي شهدت على حياة مارون بغدادي وأعماله. خلال هذه الرحلة، تلتقي سرحال بالمقربين منه ومن عملوا معه لتجمع ذكرياتهم معه وتُجمّع صورًا من الأرشيف ومقتطفاتٍ من أفلامه. لا يتوقف الفيلم الوثائقي وعاد مارون إلى بيروت عند استرجاع مسيرة بغدادي المهنية، بل يرسم أيضًا صورةً عن لبنان، تأخذ فيها السينما دور المرآة التي تعكس الروايات التاريخية والشخصية والجماعية لهذا البلد.

Film director

ENG. Feyrouz Serhal acquired her Master’s degree in Film and Screen Studies at Goldsmiths College University of London in 2009. Her short narrative film Tshweesh won the film prize of Robert Bosch Stiftung during Berlinale 2016 and was premiered in Locarno Film Festival in 2017. Tshweesh has screened in more than 60 festivals around the world. In 2022, Feyrouz wrote and directed the short film I Come from the Sea. In 2023 She wrote and directed the feature documentary The Third Rahbani. On the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of Maroun Bagdadi’s death, she signed the documentary Wa Ada Maroun Ila Beirut (Maroun Returns to Beirut) in 2024, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival. She is now developing I Am Here but You Can’t See Me, her first feature narrative film as director.

FR. Feyrouz Serhal a écrit et réalisé plusieurs courtes œuvres vidéo indépendantes. Son court métrage narratif Tshweesh a remporté le Prix du film de la Robert Bosch Stiftung en 2016 et a été présenté en avant-première au Festival du Film de Locarno en 2017. Tshweesh a été projeté dans plus de 80 festivals à travers le monde et a reçu une douzaine de prix. En 2023, Feyrouz a terminé deux courts métrages de fiction : I Come from the Sea, dont la première a eu lieu au Festival International du Film de Shanghai en juin 2023, et Sen Ti. En 2023, elle a également réalisé The Third of the Rahbanis, un long métrage documentaire produit par Al Jazeera Documentary Channel sur la vie du compositeur libanais Elias Rahbani. A l’occasion du trentième anniversaire du décès de Maroun Bagdadi, elle signe en 2024 le documentaire Wa Ada Maroun Ila Beirut (Maroun Returns to Beirut), projeté en première à la Mostra de Venise. Elle travaille actuellement sur son premier long métrage, I Am Here but You Can’t See Me.

فيروز سرحال حائزة على ماجيستير في الدراسات السنيمائية من جامعة غولدسميث كوليج في لندن. فاز فيلمها الروائي القصير تشويش بجائرة روبرت بوش وكان عرضه الأول في مهرجان لوكارنو السينمائي المرموق في عام 2017. عرض بعدها في العديد من المهرجانات العالمية وحصد عدداً من الجوائز. في عام 2023 كتبت وأخرجت الفيلمين القصيرين: أنا يا بحر منك كما كتبت وأخرجت الفيلم الوثائقي الطويل ثالث الرحابنة.
بمناسبة الذكرى الثلاثين لوفاة مروان بغدادي، إخراجت في عام 2024 الوثائقي وعد مروان إلى بيروت، الذي عرض لأول مرة في مهرجان البندقية السينمائي. تقوم سرحال الآن بالتحضير لفيلمها الروائي الطويل الأول هنا ولا تراني.
