The film traces the career of Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi (1927-2023), one of India’s most influential 20th-century architects, deceased in 2023 whose work was honored with the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2018. This documentary takes viewers on a journey through Doshi’s long career, from his collaborations (with, among others, Le Corbusier, for whom he worked early on in his career) to the sharing of his sources of inspiration. More than a film about the architect’s work, The Promise is a true lesson in humanity, an intimate moment blended with wit and wisdom!

Le film retrace le parcours de Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi (1927-2023), l’un des architectes les plus influents du XXème siècle, décédé en 2023, dont l’œuvre a notamment été distinguée par le prestigieux Prix Pritzker d’architecture en 2018. Ce documentaire offre aux spectateurs une plongée dans la longue carrière de Doshi, de ses collaborations (avec, entre autres, Le Corbusier, pour lequel il travailla en début de carrière) jusqu’au partage de ses sources d’inspiration. Plus qu’un film sur l’œuvre de l’architecte, The Promise se présente comme une véritable leçon d’humanité, un moment intime mêlé d’humour et de sagesse !

يسترجع الفيلم مسيرة بالكريشنا فيتالداس دوتشي (١٩٢٧-٢٠٢٣)، أحد المهندسين المعماريين الأكثر نفوذًا في الهند في القرن العشرين، الذي توفّي في العام ٢٠٢٣، وقد تميّز عمله بشكل خاصّ بجائزة بريتزكر المرموقة في مجال الهندسة في العام ٢٠١٨. يتيح هذا الفيلم الوثائقيّ للمشاهدين إمكانية الغوص في حياة دوتشي المهنية الطويلة، وفي التعرّف إلى شراكاته (من بينها، شراكته مع reisubroC eL، الذي عمل لديه في بداية عمله) وحتّى المشاركة في مصادر إلهامه. يُعتبر الوعد – المهندس ب ﻑ دوشي أكثر من مجرّد فيلم عن عمل المهندس المعماريّ، لا بل هو درس حقيقيّ في الإنسانية، ولحظة حميمية ممزوجة بالفكاهة والحكمة!

Film Director

Jan Schmidt-Garre, director of film and opera producer. He studied directing with Noelte, Ponnelle and Esrig at the Munich Film Academy (department of feature films); philosophy at the University of Philosophy; opera productions in Germany and Switzerland. He has made numerous documentaries and feature films on the subjects of music, dance and contemporary art.

Jan Schmidt-Garre est réalisateur de films et producteur d’opéra. Il a fait des études de réalisation avec Noelte, Ponnelle et Esrig à l’Académie du film de Munich (département des longs métrages) ; de philosophie à l’Université de philosophie ; de productions d’opéra en Allemagne et en Suisse. Il a réalisé de nombreux documentaires et longs métrages sur la musique, la danse et l’art contemporain.

جان شميدت جارمخرج سينمائي ومنتج أوبرا. درس الإخراج مع نويلتي وبونيل وإيسريج في أكاديمية ميونيخ للسينما (قسم الأفلام الطويلة)؛ والفلسفة في جامعة الفلسفة؛ وإنتاجات الأوبرا في ألمانيا وسويسرا. أخرج العديد من الوثائقيات والأفلام الطويلة عن الموسيقى والرقص والفن المعاصر.

George Arbid is a Lebanese architect and historian with successive teaching positions at Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts (ALBA), American University of Beirut (AUB) and the Lebanese University (UL). He holds a degree in Architecture from ALBA and a Doctor of Design degree from Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He was also a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the History, Theory and Criticism Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
His research and writings cover modern architecture in Lebanon and the Arab World. He is a co-founder and director of the Arab Center for Architecture (ACA) in Beirut. He served on several competitions and award juries, including the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award 2019 and the Transfer Architecture Video Award 2019. His latest publication (2022) is a co-edited book Designing Modernity, Architecture in the Arab World, 1945-1973. In 2023, Arbid curated the exhibition “A journey into Architecture Archives: Beirut, Cairo, Rabat” commissioned by the Sharjah Architecture Triennial.

George Arbid est un architecte et historien libanais qui a successivement enseigné à l’Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts (ALBA), à l’Université Américaine (AUB) de Beyrouth et à l’Université Libanaise (UL). Il est titulaire d’un diplôme en architecture de l’ALBA et d’un doctorat en design de la Harvard University Graduate School of Design. Il a également été chercheur invité Fulbright au programme d’Histoire, de Théorie et de Critique du Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Ses recherches et ses écrits portent sur l’architecture moderne au Liban et dans le monde arabe. Il est co-fondateur et directeur de l’Arab Center for Architecture (ACA) à Beyrouth. Il a participé à plusieurs jurys de concours et de prix, dont le Prix de l’Union européenne pour l’architecture contemporaine – Mies van der Rohe Award 2019 et le Transfer Architecture Video Award 2019. Sa dernière publication (2022) est le livre qu’il a codirigé Designing Modernity, Architecture in the Arab World, 1945-1973. En 2023, Arbid a produit comme commissaire l’exposition A Journey into Architecture Archives : Beirut, Cairo, Rabat commandée par la Sharjah Architecture Triennial.

جورج عربيد مهندس معماريّ ومؤرّخ لبنانيّ، قام بالتدريس على التوالي في كلّ من الأكاديمية اللبنانية للفنون الجميلة (ألبا)، والجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت، والجامعة اللبنانية. حاز على شهادة في الهندسة المعمارية من جامعة (ألبا)، ودكتوراه في التصميم من جامعة هارفارد للدراسات العليا للتصميم. كما كان باحثًا-زائرًا ضمن إطار برنامج فولبرايت في مجالات التاريخ والنظريات والنقد، في معهد ماساتشوستس للتكنولوجيا.
تشمل أبحاثه وكتاباته الهندسة المعمارية الحديثة في لبنان والعالم العربيّ. وهو شريك- مؤسّس ومدير المركز العربيّ للهندسة المعمارية في بيروت. شارك في العديد من لجان تحكيم المسابقات ومنح الجوائز، منها جائزة الاتحاد الأوروبيّ للهندسة المعاصرة وجائزة “نقل فيديو الهندسة المعمارية” في العام ٢٠١٩. أحدث منشوراته (عام ٢٠٢٢) الكتاب الذي شارك في تحريره “تصميم الحداثة، العمارة في العالم العربيّ” ١٩٤٥-١٩٧٣.
في العام ٣٢٠٢، شارك عربيد في تأسيس معرض “رحلة في أرشيف العمارة: بيروت، القاهرة، الرباط” بتكليف من ترينالي الشارقة للعمارة.
