ENG. A symbol of modernity, progress and democracy, is Chandigarh, the new Indian city designed by Swiss architect Le Corbusier (1887-1965), still an unfinished dream? The Power of Utopia attempts to answer this question by following four cultural figures in Chandigarh, interacting daily with this legacy city. While the success of this new urbanism is still the subject of much debate, the documentary looks at what utopian endeavors teach us about the relationship between architecture and politics, cultures and societies.
FR. Symbole de modernité, de progrès et de démocratie, Chandigarh, ville indienne nouvelle conçue par l’architecte suisse Le Corbusier (1887-1965), reste-t-elle un rêve inachevé ? The Power of Utopia tente d’y répondre en suivant quatre acteurs culturels à Chandigarh, interagissant quotidiennement avec cette ville héritage. Si le succès de ce nouvel urbanisme fait encore l’objet de nombreux débats, le documentaire s’interroge sur ce que les tentatives d’utopie enseignent des relations entre l’architecture et le politique, cultures et sociétés.
هل تبقى شانديغرا، المدينة الهندية الجديدة التي صمّمها المهندس السويسري لو كوربوزيه (1887-1965) لتكون رمز الحداثة والتقدّم والديمقراطية، حلمًا لم يتحقق؟ يسعى فيلم قوة اليوتوبيا للإجابة على هذا السؤال من خلال مرافقة أربع شخصيات ثقافية في شانديغرا أثناء تفاعلهم مع الحياة اليومية في هذه البيئة الحضرية الجديدة التي لا تزال موضع العديد من السجالات. ويطرح هذا الفيلم الوثائقي الأسئلة حول ما نستخلصه من محاولات الوصول إلى اليوتوبيا حول العلاقة بين العمارة من جهة والسياسة والثقافات والمجتمعات من جهةٍ أخرى.
Film Directors
ENG. Karin Bucher has been developing exhibition and theatre projects as a freelance scenographer since 2002 for renowned cultural institutions, theatres and museums, as well as free site-specific projects such as audio walks, theatrical tours and installation exhibitions in collaboration with creative artists from all disciplines.
Thomas Karrer has spent the last 30 years making numerous video portraits and short documentaries for educational institutions, non-profit organizations, museums, cantons and municipalities, as well as for the online platforms of the University of St. Gallen.
His first cinema documentary Zwischenwelten had its world premiere at the Solothurn Film Festival in 2020 and enjoyed great success despite pandemic restrictions.
Karin Bucher & Thomas Karrer live and work in the Palais Bleu Cooperative in Trogen (Switzerland). The two have completed a wide range of film projects together, and have received several awards for their work.
FR. Karin Bucher, développe, depuis 2002, des projets d’exposition et de théâtre en tant que scénographe indépendante pour des institutions culturelles, des théâtres et des musées renommés, ainsi que des projets gratuits spécifiques au site, tels que des parcours audios, des visites théâtrales et des expositions d’installations en collaboration avec des artistes créatifs de toutes les disciplines.
Thomas Karrer a réalisé, au cours des 30 dernières années, de nombreux portraits vidéo et courts documentaires pour des établissements d’enseignement, des organisations à but non lucratif, des musées, des cantons et des municipalités, ainsi que pour les plateformes en ligne de l’université de Saint-Gall.
Son premier documentaire cinématographique, Zwischenwelten, a été présenté en première mondiale aux Journées de Soleure en 2020 et a connu un grand succès malgré les restrictions liées à la pandémie.
Karin Bucher et Thomas Karrer vivent et travaillent dans la coopérative Palais Bleu à Trogen (Suisse). Ils ont réalisé ensemble un large éventail de projets cinématographiques et ont reçu plusieurs prix pour leur travail.
توماس كارير على مدار الثلاثين عامًا الماضية، أخرج العديد من أفلام الفيديو بورتريه والأفلام الوثائقية القصيرة للمؤسسات التعليمية والمنظمات غير الربحية والمتاحف والمقاطعات والبلديات، إلى جانب منصات جامعة سانت غالن على الإنترنت.
وقد عُرض فيلمه الوثائقي السينمائي الأول عوالم وسيطة لأول مرة في احتفالٍ عالميٍ في مهرجان أيام سولوتورن السينمائية في العام 2020، وحقق نجاحًا كبيرًا على الرغم من القيود التي كانت مفروضة بسبب الجائحة.
كارين بوشر وتوماس كارير يقيمان ويعملان في تعاونية بالي بلو في تورغين (سويسرا). وقد أخرجا معًا مجموعةً كبيرةً من المشاريع السينمائية وفازا بالعديد من الجوائز عن أعمالهما.
