La bataille du cèdre – معركة الأرز
After 4 years of interruption, the Beirut Art Film Festival returns to all schools in Lebanon, private and public, in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and the support of the Philippe Jabre association with the documentary film La bataille du cèdre, directed by Laurent Sorcelle (2028, 52′ French with Arabic s-t).
From October 1 to December 30, 2023, schools are invited to organize screenings of the film in their theaters &/or classrooms. A vimeo link is made available. Free for all schools. Registration by email is mandatory.
From November 7 to 17, 2023, daily sessions are organized by the BAFF in collaboration with the Oriental Library of Saint-Joseph University, at the Leïla Turqui Amphitheater. Those sessions are followed by guided tours of the Library. Free for all schools.
A voucher for 10 liters of gasoline to schools in Greater Beirut and a voucher for 20 liters of gasoline to schools in other regions are offered for each coach by the Association Philippe Jabre.
Transport, screenings and visits are insured by the Willis Towers Watson insurance company.
Après 4 années d’interruption, le Beirut Art Film Festival revient dans toutes les écoles du Liban, privées et publiques, en partenariat avec le ministère de l’Education et de l’Enseignement Supérieur et le soutien de l’association Philippe Jabre, avec le film La bataille du cèdre, de Laurent Sorcelle (2028, 52′ français avec s-t arabe).
Du 1er Octobre au 30 décembre 2023, les écoles sont invitées à projeter dans leurs salles le film. Un lien viméo est mis à la disposition des responsables scolaires. Gratuit. Inscription par email nécessaire.
Du 7 au 17 novembre 2023, chaque jour, plusieurs séances sont organisées par le BAFF, en collaboration avec la Bibliothèque Orientale de l’Université Saint-Joseph, dans l’amphithéâtre Leïla Turquie, et suivies de visites guidées de la Bibliothèque. Un bon de 10 litres d’essence aux écoles du Grand Beyrouth et un bon de 20 litres d’essence aux écoles des autres régions sont offerts pour chaque autocar par l’Association Philippe Jabre.
Transports, projections et visites sont assurées par la compagnie Willis Towers Watson.
About the movie. In 1985, Youssef Tawk, a Lebanese doctor trained in Europe, returns to his war-torn country. He settles in his native village, right below the cedar forest, of which only 380 trees remain, some over 2,000 years old. Although these trees have withstood massive deforestation, parasite attacks and pollution, “Doctor Youssef”, as the people of Bsharreh call him, knows that the forest cannot develop naturally on its own. He made it a priority to reforest the region’s mountains. La bataille du cèdre tells the extraordinary tale of a man working alone to restore the cedar forests of Lebanon. It’s the amazing story of a humanist struggle to preserve an important part of Lebanon’s identity, but also to protect an exceptional legacy.
A propos du film. En 1985, Youssef Tawk, médecin libanais formé en Europe, rentre dans son pays en guerre. Il s’installe dans son village natal, au pied de la forêt des cèdres, dont il ne reste plus que 380 spécimens, pour certains, âgés de plus de 2000 ans. Si ces arbres ont résisté à la déforestation massive, aux attaques parasitaires et à la pollution, le « Docteur Youssef », comme l’appellent les gens de Bécharré, sait que la forêt ne pourra pas se développer seule et naturellement. Il fait du reboisement des montagnes de la région sa priorité. La bataille du cèdre raconte l’aventure extraordinaire d’un homme qui œuvre, seul, à la renaissance des forêts de cèdres du Liban. C’est l’étonnante histoire d’un combat humaniste pour la sauvegarde d’un aspect de l’identité libanaise, mais aussi pour la protection d’un patrimoine exceptionnel.

في العام ١٩٨٥، عاد يوسف طوق، وهو طبيب لبنانيّ درس في أوروبا، إلى بلاده وهي في حالة حرب. استقرّ في قريته الأمّ، عند سفح غابة الأرز، التي لم يتبقَّ منها سوى ٣٨٠ شجرة، بعضها يزيد عمرها عن ٢٠٠٠ عام. إذا كانت هذه الأشجار قد استطاعت مقاومة عملية إزالة الغابات الواسعة النطاق والهجمات الطفيلية والتلوّث، فإن «الطبيب يوسف»، كما يسمّيه سكان بشري، يعلم أن الغابة لن تنمو بمفردها وبشكل طبيعيّ. فجعل إعادة تشجير جبال المنطقة من أولوياته. تحكي “معركة الأرز” عن المغامرة المذهلة لرجل يعمل، بمفرده، على إحياء غابات الأرز في لبنان. إنها قصّة مدهشة لكفاح إنسانيّ من أجل حماية جانب من جوانب الهوية اللبنانية، ولكن أيضًا من أجل حماية تراثٍ استثنائيّ

Cloé Barcha is a cultural coordinator at the Oriental Library. Particularly keen to share her knowledge with young people, she taught French to high school students at Collège Notre-Dame du Mont-Carmel, while completing a Master’s degree in French Literature at Saint Joseph University of Beirut. She joined the Oriental Library in 2023, where she runs cultural activities, educational programs and communication.

Cloé Barcha est médiatrice culturelle à la Bibliothèque Orientale. Particulièrement sensible au partage du savoir auprès des jeunes, elle a enseigné le français aux classes complémentaires au Collège Notre-Dame du Mont-Carmel, parallèlement à son master de recherche en Lettres Françaises à l’Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth. Elle rejoint la BO en 2023 où elle s’occupe des activités culturelles, de l’offre pédagogique et de la communication.

كلوي برشا هي الوسيطة الثقافية في المكتبة الشرقية. ونظرًا لاهتمامها الكبير بنشر المعرفة بين الشباب، قامت بتدريس اللغة الفرنسية للصفوف المتوسطة في مدرسة سيدة جبل الكرمل ـ الفنار، إلى جانب تحضيرها درجة الماجستير في الأدب الفرنسيّ، في جامعة القديس يوسف في بيروت. انضمّت إلى المكتبة الشرقيّة في العام ٢٠٢٣ حيث تهتم بالأنشطة الثقافية والعرض التربويّ وبمجال التواصل

Sergio Kesrouwani holds a bachelor’s degree in archaeology from the American University of Beirut and a master’s degree in maritime archaeology from the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. He has actively participated in multiple archaeological excavations and projects in Lebanon, demonstrating a passion for uncovering the country’s rich historical heritage. Since May 2023, he has been serving as a specialized librarian at the Oriental Library.

Sergio Kesrouwani détient une licence en archéologie de l’Université Américaine de Beyrouth et un master en archéologie maritime de l’Université de Southampton au Royaume-Uni. Il a participé activement à de multiples fouilles et projets archéologiques au Liban, témoignant d’une passion pour la découverte du riche patrimoine historique du pays. Depuis mai 2023, il assume le poste de bibliothécaire spécialisé à la Bibliothèque Orientale.
جولات إرشادية مع سيرجيو كسرواني. عالم الآثار سيرجيو كسرواني. حاز الإجازة في علم الآثار من الجامعة الأميركيّة في بيروت، ثمّ سافر إلى المملكة المتّحدة ليتابع دراساته العليا، فحاز ماجستيرًا في علم الآثار البحريّ من جامعة ساوثهامبتن. ساهم، إثر عودته إلى لبنان، بمجموعة من مشاريع التنقيب والحفر، وإعادة تأهيل الآثارات، والبحث والتوثيق. يعمل منذ أيّار ٢٠٢٣، أمينًا للمكتبة الشرقيّة في بيروت
