ENG. In 1881, Édouard Manet ill and feeling that his end was nearing, wrote his pictorial will on a large painting entitled Un Bar aux Folies-Bergère, which he showed at the 1882 Salon.
He had been misunderstood throughout his career: Un Bar was intended to render explicit the new relationship with the viewer that he had created in some of his most ambitious works.
But Manet was unable to be didactic, and in the end, Un Bar turns out to be the most intriguing of his works, which we shall attempt to unravel here.

FR. En 1881, malade et sentant sa fin proche, Édouard Manet coucha son testament pictural sur une grande toile qu’il montra au Salon de 1882 et qu’il intitula Un Bar aux Folies-Bergère. 
Il avait été incompris durant toute sa carrière : Un Bar devait rendre explicite le nouveau rapport au spectateur qu’il avait inventé dans certaines de ses toiles les plus ambitieuses. 
Mais Manet était incapable de didactisme, et en définitive Un Bar se révèle comme la plus énigmatique de ses œuvres, qu’il s’agira ici de tenter de déchiffrer.

لقد أُسيء فهمه طوال فترة حياته المهنية: كان على هذه اللوحة أن توضح العلاقة الجديدة مع المتفرّج والتي ابتكرها في بعض لوحاته الأكثر طموحًا. لكن مانيه لم يكن قادرًا على عرض فكرته بطريقة تفسيرية، وفي النهاية تظهر اللوحة وكأنّها أكثر أعماله غموضًا، وهذا ما سنحاول فكّ رموزه هنا.

Thierry de Duve Historian and philosopher of art Thierry de Duve is Evelyn Kranes Kossak Professor at Hunter College, City University of New York, and Emeritus from the Université de Lille 3. In 2014 he was Daniel J. Evans Visiting Professor at Evergreen State College, Olympia, WA, and in 2013, Kirk Varnedoe Visiting Professor at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. In 2012-2013, he was William C. Seitz Senior Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (CASVA) in Washington, DC; and in 2010, he was J.P. Getty Foundation Distinguished Visiting Professor, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. His English publications include Pictorial Nominalism (1991), Kant after Duchamp (1996), Clement Greenberg Between the Lines (1996, 2010), Look—100 Years of Contemporary Art (2001), and Sewn In the Sweatshops of Marx: Beuys, Warhol, Klein, Duchamp (2012). In 2013-2014, he published six essays in Artforum which he is now expanding and gathering into a book titled Duchamp’s Telegram. Two volumes of his Essais datés, published in French by Mamco in Geneva, have appeared recently: Volume 1, titled Duchampiana, in 2014, and Volume II, titled Adresses, in February 2016. Aesthetics at Large (Art, Ethics, Politics), a book of essays on aesthetics, is forthcoming from the University of Chicago Press in the fall of 2018.

Thierry de Duve Philosophe et historien de l’art, Thierry de Duve est Evelyn Kranes Kossak Professor à Hunter College, City University of New York, et Professeur émérite de l’Université de Lille 3. Il a consacré de nombreux efforts à tenter de comprendre en quoi l’urinoir baptisé Fountain par Marcel Duchamp en 1917 a marqué un tournant dans l’histoire de l’art, et plus d’efforts encore à résoudre les problèmes inédits qu’il a posés à l’esthétique philosophique. Son livre le plus récent, Duchamp’s Telegram: From Beaux-Arts to Art-in-General (Reaktion Books, Londres, 2023), achève ce travail entamé avec Nominalisme pictural (1984) et poursuivi avec Au nom de l’art (1989), Résonances du readymade (1989), Kant after Duchamp (2006), et Aesthetics at Large, volume 1: Art, Ethics, Politics (2018). Il travaille en ce moment au volume 2, Farewell to Romanticism. Deux volumes de ses Essais datés ont été publiés par le Mamco à Genève : Duchampiana en 2014 et Adresses en 2016. Enfin, au début de 2024 doit paraître à La Lettre Volée, Bruxelles, Voici 20 ans après, qui revient sur la grande exposition, « Voici, 100 ans d’art contemporain », que de Duve a montée au Palais des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles en 2000.
