ENG. Archaeologist Laïla Nehmé took on a crazy challenge: leading an expedition into the deserts of Saudi Arabia and Jordan to find the exact incense route. Through this unique archaeological investigation, rather a road movie than a documentary, the film explores an entire civilization: that of the Nabataeans, the masters of the desert. Who were they? How did they manage to build such a powerful kingdom? What were their religion and beliefs? How did they live? The latest archaeological discoveries made in Hegra and Petra, the capital of the kingdom, complete the portrait of this still very mysterious civilization.
واجهت عالمة الآثار ليلى نعمة تحديًا مجنونًا: حيث قادت رحلة استكشافية إلى صحاري المملكة العربية السعودية والأردن للعثور على المسار الدقيق لطريق البخور. من خلال هذا التحقيق الأثري الفريد، في شكل فيلم طريق (road movie) ، يستكشف هذا الفيلم حضارة بأكملها: حضارة الأنباط، أسياد الصحراء. من كانو؟ كيف تمكنوا من بناء مثل هذه المملكة القوية؟ وماذا كانت ديانتهم ومعتقداتهم؟ كيف عاشوا؟ أحدث الاكتشافات الأثرية التي تمت في هغرة وبترا عاصمة المملكة، تُكمل صورة هذه الحضارة التي لا تزال غامضة للغاية.
FR. L’archéologue Laïla Nehmé s’est lancé un pari fou : mener une expédition dans les déserts d’Arabie Saoudite et de Jordanie pour retrouver le tracé exact de la route de l’encens. A travers cette enquête archéologique inédite, sous forme de road-movie, c’est toute une civilisation que ce film explore: celle des Nabatéens, les maîtres du désert. Qui étaient-ils ? Comment ont-ils réussi à constituer un royaume si puissant? Quelles étaient leur religion et leurs croyances ? Comment vivaient-ils ? Les dernières découvertes archéologiques réalisées à Hégra et Pétra, la capitale du royaume, viennent compléter le portrait de cette civilisation encore très mystérieuse.
Dr. Laïla Nehmé
Laïla Nehmé, archaeologist and epigraphist, is research director at the CNRS. She has worked for 35 years in the Middle East (Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia) and directed or co-directed, for twenty years (2002-2023), the Archaeological Mission of Madâin Sâlih, ancient Hegra, in Saudi Arabia. Her research mainly focuses on the Nabataean field, with a predilection for themes linked to urban spaces and cults and a specialization in Nabataean epigraphy. She is the author of numerous works, including one of the latest, Archeology in the Land of the Nabataeans of Arabia. Hégra Guide, gives large place to recent discoveries made on this site. She also leads the DiCoNab project, the Digital Corpus of Nabataean and Nabataean Inscriptions, and has been carrying out expeditions to north-west Arabia in search of ancient caravan trails for more than ten years.
Laïla Nehmé is a member of the British Academy and Knight of the Légion d’Honneur.
ليلى نعمة، عالمة آثار وعلوم الكتابات، هي مديرة الأبحاث في المركز الوطني للبحث العلمي(CNRS) . عملت لمدة 35 عامًا في الشرق الأوسط (سوريا والأردن والمملكة العربية السعودية) وأخرجت أو شاركت، لمدة عشرين عامًا (2002-2023)، في إخراج البعثة الأثرية لمدائن صالح، الهغرة القديمة، في المملكة العربية السعودية. تركز أبحاثها بشكل رئيسي على المجال النبطي، مع الميول لمواضيع المرتبطة بالمساحات الحضرية والطوائف والتخصص في الكتابة النبطية. وهي مؤلفة العديد من الأعمال، بما في ذلك أحد أحدث أعمالها، علم الآثار في أرض الأنباط في شبه الجزيرة العربية. دليل الهغرة، يمنح مكان الصدارة للاكتشافات الحديثة التي تمت على هذا الموقع. وهي تقود أيضًا مشروع DiCoNab ، المجموعة الرقمية النبطية و للنقوش النبطية، وتقوم ببعثات استكشافية إلى شمال غرب شبه الجزيرة العربية بحثًا عن مسارات القوافل القديمة لأكثر من عشر سنوات.

Laïla Nehmé, archéologue et épigraphiste, est directrice de recherche au CNRS. Elle travaille depuis 35 ans au Proche-Orient (Syrie, Jordanie, Arabie Saoudite) et a dirigé ou co-dirigé, pendant vingt ans (2002-2023), la Mission archéologique de Madâin Sâlih, l’ancienne Hégra, en Arabie Saoudite. Ses recherches portent principalement sur le domaine nabatéen, avec une prédilection pour des thèmes liés aux espaces urbains et aux cultes et une spécialisation en épigraphie nabatéenne. Elle est l’auteur de nombreux ouvrages, dont l’un des derniers, Archéologie au pays des Nabatéens d’Arabie. Guide de Hégra, fait la part belle aux découvertes récentes réalisées sur ce site. Elle pilote par ailleurs le projet DiCoNab, the Digital Corpus of Nabataean and Nabataean inscriptions et réalise depuis plus de dix ans des expéditions dans le nord-ouest de l’Arabie à la recherche des anciennes pistes caravanières.
