ENG. Istanbul, Beirut, Baghdad, Cairo. From the late 19th century, artists from the former Ottoman Empire set out for Europe to learn new creative techniques. But this journey will ironically bring them closer to their own sources. In their paintings, they reveal a world of unknown treasures, inventing, on the way, an alternative modernity.
إسطنبول، بيروت، بغداد، القاهرة. منذ نهاية القرن التاسع عشر، ولّى فنانو الإمبراطورية العثمانية السابقة وجوههم صوب أوروبا ليكتسبوا المعرفة في كيفية التعامل مع الابتكارات التقنية الحديثة. لكن هذا الدرب لم يزدهم إلا قربًا من الأراضي التي أتوا منها، فلقد انكبّ فنانو هذه المنطقة، رويدًا رويدًا، على سرد عالمهم الغني بالكنوز المجهولة، ليبتكروا بذلك حداثةً بديلةً.
FR. Istanbul, Beyrouth, Bagdad, Le Caire. Dès la fin du XIXème siècle, pour se former aux nouvelles techniques de création, les artistes de l’ex-Empire ottoman mettent le cap sur l’Europe. Mais ce chemin va les rapprocher de leurs propres sources. Peu à peu, les artistes de la région vont raconter un monde aux trésors méconnus, inventant en chemin une modernité alternative.

ENG. Ilana Navaro is a director originally from Istanbul, based in Paris. After studying sociology in New York, she moves back to Turkey in 1995, where she works as a journalist for several years, before settling in Paris. Since then, she works as a filmmaker, mainly for France Télévisions and for the French-German channel Arte. Some of her most acclaimed films are Joséphine Baker, the story of an awakening (2018), Reinventing China (2023). She is also a regular contributor to France Culture Radio and writer for radio dramas.
إيلانا نافارو، مخرجة مقيمة في باريس وبالأصل من إسطنبول. بعد أنهاء دراستها في نيويورك في مجال العلوم الاجتماعية، عادت إلى تركيا في العام 1995 حيث عملت صحفيةً طوال سنواتٍ قبل أن تنتقل للاستقرار في باريس. ومنذ ذلك الحين وهي منكبّةٌ على إخراج الأفلام، لا سيما لصالح قناتي ’آرتي‘ وفرانس تلفزيون. ومن أبرز أعمالها Joséphine Baker, première icône noire “جوزيفين بايكر، أول أيقونة سوداء” (2018) و Chine, rêves et cauchemars “الصين، الأحلام والكوابيس”(2023). ذلك إلى جانب كونها مساهمةً دائمةً في حلقات قناة ’فرانس كولتور’ ومؤلفة مسلسلات إذاعية خيالية.
FR. Ilana Navaro est une réalisatrice originaire d’Istanbul basée à Paris. Après des études en sociologie à New York, elle retourne en Turquie en 1995 où elle travaille en tant que journaliste pendant plusieurs années, avant de s’installer à Paris. Depuis, elle réalise des films, surtout pour France Télévisions et Arte, dont les plus acclamés sont Joséphine Baker, première icône noire (2018), et Chine, rêves et cauchemars (2023). Elle est aussi une contributrice régulière des émissions de France Culture et autrice de fictions radiophoniques.
