“Cilama” is what cinema was called in the popular Tripolitan dialect.
Cinema played a major role in the lives of city dwellers between the 1930s and the end of the 20th century. The number of cinemas exceeded thirty. They were spread throughout the city, from Al-Tal Square to the boulevard, through the inner districts, Bab al-Tabbaneh, and up to Al-Mina.
Photographed between 2008 and 2022, 40 theatres or what remains of them reveal the vestiges of a bygone era but also the traces of a socio-economic and cultural transformation of the capital of North Lebanon.
The cinemas are listed in alphabetical order with the potential period of their activity.

“Cilama” est ce qu’on appelait le cinéma dans le dialecte populaire tripolitain.
Le cinéma occupait une place prépondérante dans la vie des citadins entre les années 1930 et la fin du XXe siècle. Le nombre de salles de cinéma dépassait la trentaine. Elles étaient réparties dans toute la ville, de la place Al-Tal au boulevard, en passant par les quartiers intérieurs, Bab al-Tabbaneh, et jusqu’à Al-Mina.
Photographiées entre 2008 et 2022, 40 salles ou ce qui en reste révèlent les vestiges d’une époque révolue mais aussi les traces d’une transformation socio-économique et culturelle de la capitale du Liban-Nord.
Les salles sont classées par ordre alphabétique avec la période potentielle de leur activité.

عُرفت السينما في الأوساط الشعبيّة الطرابلسيّة باسم “سيلَما” واحتلّت مكانةً مهمّة في حياة عاصمة الشمال في لبنان، امتدّت من الثلاثينيّات إلى نهاية القرن العشرين.
تخطّى عدد صالات السينما الثلاثين وانتشرت في جميع أنحاء المدينة من ساحة التلّ إلى البولفار والأحياء الداخليّة وباب التبانة وصولاً إلى الميناء.
هكذا تظهر أربعون صالة أو ما تبقّى منها من خلال مجموعة من الصور التقطت بين الأعوام 2008 و2022 وهي تكشف عن آثار من زمن غابر وعن تحوّلات اجتماعيّة واقتصاديّة وثقافيّة شهدتها طرابلس.
تمّ تصنيف صالات السينما حسب الترتيب الأبجدي باللغة الأجنبيّة مع تحديد فترة نشاطها المحتملة.
