ENG. From the scars of the civil war to the explosion of August 04, 2020, through family and personal mourning, Beirut is, in the eyes of the director, a city of pain and fear. In many ways a modern dystopia, After the End of the World returns to the memory of Beirut head-on, through a series of rich archives and exchanges. By questioning the oppositions that make up Beirut, Nadim Mishlawi aims to better understand it and the experience it provides. A film that questions the history of a city, its spaces and, above all, our place in a world that only exists in a blurred temporality.

FR. Des stigmates laissés par la guerre civile à l’explosion du 04 août 2020, en passant par le deuil familial et personnel, Beyrouth est, aux yeux du réalisateur, ville de douleurs et d’angoisses. Conçu à bien des égards comme une dystopie moderne, After the End of the World revient de manière frontale sur la mémoire de Beyrouth, à travers une riche série d’archives et d’échanges. En interrogeant les oppositions qui fondent Beyrouth, Nadim Mishlawi souhaite mieux la comprendre et saisir l’expérience qu’elle procure. Un film qui questionne l’histoire d’une ville, ses espaces et, surtout, notre place dans un monde qui n’existe que dans une temporalité floue.

الندوب التي خلّفتها الحرب الأهلية، ثمّ انفجار ٤ آب 2020، مرورًا بالحداد العائليّ والشخصيّ؛ كلّ ذلك جعل المخرج يرى في بيروت مدينة الآلام والمخاوف. بعد نهاية العالم، المصمَّم في نواحٍ عدة منه على أنّه عالم من الواقع الحديث المرير، يعود مباشرةً إلى ذاكرة بيروت، من خلال سلسلة غنية من المحفوظات والتبادلات. يتمنّى نديم مشلاوي، عن طريق مساءلة التناقضات التي خلقت بيروت، أن يفهمها بشكل أفضل وأن يستوعب التجربة التي تقدّمها. هو فيلم يسائل تاريخ مدينة، ومساحاتها، وخصوصًا، مكاننا في عالم لا يوجد إلّا في زمن ضبابيّ

Film Director

Nadim Mishlawi is a composer and filmmaker based in Beirut, Lebanon.  In 2006, he co-founded DB Studios, a space for audio post-production and music production, and has since composed scores for documentaries, feature films, and art installations. Nadim’s writing has been published in The New Soundtrack journal (2012, 2015); and in 2015, he was invited to give a lecture at the School of Sound Symposium in London. Nadim made his directorial debut in 2011 with the documentary Sector Zero, which won the best documentary award at the Dubai International Film Festival (2011); and the Berlin Art Prize for Film and Media Arts (2013). Nadim currently teaches at the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts (ALBA).

Nadim Mishlawi compositeur et cinéaste est basé à Beyrouth, au Liban.  En 2006, il a cofondé DB Studios, un espace de post-production audio et de production musicale, et a depuis composé des musiques pour des documentaires, des longs métrages et des installations artistiques. Les écrits de Nadim ont été publiés dans le journal The New Soundtrack (2012, 2015) ; et en 2015, il a été invité à donner une conférence au School of Sound Symposium à Londres. Nadim a fait ses débuts de réalisateur en 2011 avec le documentaire Sector Zero, qui a remporté le prix du meilleur documentaire au Festival International du Film de Dubai (2011) et le Berlin Art Prize for Film and Media Arts (2013). Il est actuellement professeur à l’Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts – ALBA.

نديم مشلاوي، مؤلف موسيقي ومخرج سنيمائي يقيم في بيروت، لبنان. شارك في العام 2006 في تأسيس دب ستوديو، وهو مساحة للهندسة الصوتية بعد الإنتاج والإنتاج الموسيقي، ومنذ ذلك الحين وضع ألحاناً موسيقية لعدد من الوثائقيات والأفلام الطويلة والإنتاجات الفنية. نشر نديم كتاباته في صحيفة  نيو سوند ترك(2012 و2015) ومن ثم دُعي في العام 2015 لإلقاء محاضرة ضمن ندوة سكول أوف ميوزك في لندن. شق نديم بداياته في عالم الإخراج في العام 2011 مع الوثائقي “القطاع صفر” الذي حصد جائزة أفضل وثائقي في مهرجان دبي السينمائي (2011) وفي مهرجان جائزة برلين للأفلام وفنون الإعلام (2013). وحالياً هو أستاذ في الأكاديمية اللبنانية للفنون الجميلة – ألبا –

George Arbid is a Lebanese architect and historian with successive teaching positions at Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts (ALBA), American University of Beirut (AUB) and the Lebanese University (UL). He holds a degree in Architecture from ALBA and a Doctor of Design degree from Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He was also a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the History, Theory and Criticism Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
His research and writings cover modern architecture in Lebanon and the Arab World. He is a co-founder and director of the Arab Center for Architecture (ACA) in Beirut. He served on several competitions and award juries, including the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award 2019 and the Transfer Architecture Video Award 2019. His latest publication (2022) is a co-edited book Designing Modernity, Architecture in the Arab World, 1945-1973. In 2023, Arbid curated the exhibition “A journey into Architecture Archives: Beirut, Cairo, Rabat” commissioned by the Sharjah Architecture Triennial.

George Arbid est un architecte et historien libanais qui a successivement enseigné à l’Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts (ALBA), à l’Université Américaine (AUB) de Beyrouth et à l’Université Libanaise (UL). Il est titulaire d’un diplôme en architecture de l’ALBA et d’un doctorat en design de la Harvard University Graduate School of Design. Il a également été chercheur invité Fulbright au programme d’Histoire, de Théorie et de Critique du Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Ses recherches et ses écrits portent sur l’architecture moderne au Liban et dans le monde arabe. Il est co-fondateur et directeur de l’Arab Center for Architecture (ACA) à Beyrouth. Il a participé à plusieurs jurys de concours et de prix, dont le Prix de l’Union européenne pour l’architecture contemporaine – Mies van der Rohe Award 2019 et le Transfer Architecture Video Award 2019. Sa dernière publication (2022) est le livre qu’il a codirigé Designing Modernity, Architecture in the Arab World, 1945-1973. En 2023, Arbid a produit comme commissaire l’exposition A Journey into Architecture Archives : Beirut, Cairo, Rabat commandée par la Sharjah Architecture Triennial.

جورج عربيد مهندس معماريّ ومؤرّخ لبنانيّ، قام بالتدريس على التوالي في كلّ من الأكاديمية اللبنانية للفنون الجميلة (ألبا)، والجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت، والجامعة اللبنانية. حاز على شهادة في الهندسة المعمارية من جامعة (ألبا)، ودكتوراه في التصميم من جامعة هارفارد للدراسات العليا للتصميم. كما كان باحثًا-زائرًا ضمن إطار برنامج فولبرايت في مجالات التاريخ والنظريات والنقد، في معهد ماساتشوستس للتكنولوجيا.
تشمل أبحاثه وكتاباته الهندسة المعمارية الحديثة في لبنان والعالم العربيّ. وهو شريك- مؤسّس ومدير المركز العربيّ للهندسة المعمارية في بيروت. شارك في العديد من لجان تحكيم المسابقات ومنح الجوائز، منها جائزة الاتحاد الأوروبيّ للهندسة المعاصرة وجائزة “نقل فيديو الهندسة المعمارية” في العام ٢٠١٩. أحدث منشوراته (عام ٢٠٢٢) الكتاب الذي شارك في تحريره “تصميم الحداثة، العمارة في العالم العربيّ” ١٩٤٥-١٩٧٣.
في العام ٣٢٠٢، شارك عربيد في تأسيس معرض “رحلة في أرشيف العمارة: بيروت، القاهرة، الرباط” بتكليف من ترينالي الشارقة للعمارة.
