ENG. What do Poland’s Leszek Możdżer, South Korea’s Jae-Yeon Won and Syria’s Fares Marek Basmadji have in common? All three are pianists, and a common experience brings them together, beyond the multiple cultures and geographies that define them: the music of pianist Frederic Chopin has enabled them to heal and open up. The documentary follows these three individuals as each prepares to give a musical performance of Chopin, in places strongly associated with memory: the Auschwitz concentration camp, the border between North and South Korea, downtown Beirut. Chopin. I am not Afraid of Darkness asks an essential question: what is the role of art in the process of collective and individual healing?
FR. Quel pourrait être le point commun entre le polonais Leszek Możdżer, le sud-coréen Jae-Yeon Won et le syrien Fares Marek Basmadji ? Pianistes tous les trois, une expérience commune les réunit, au-delà des multiples cultures et géographies qui les caractérisent : la musique du pianiste Frédéric Chopin leur a permis de guérir et de s’ouvrir. Le documentaire suit ces trois individus tandis que chacun s’apprête à donner une représentation musicale de Chopin, dans des lieux forts en mémoire : le camp de concentration d’Auschwitz, la frontière entre la Corée du Nord et du Sud, le centre-ville de Beyrouth. Chopin. I am not Afraid of Darkness pose une question essentielle : quel est le rôle de l’art dans la guérison collective et individuelle ?
ما القاسم المشترك بين البولنديّ ليزيك موودر والكوريّ الجنوبيّ جاي-يون وون والسوريّ فارس ماريك باسمادجي؟ كلّهم عازفو بيانو، تجمَعُهم تجربة مشتركة، بعيدًا عن تعدّد الثقافات والجغرافيا الذي يميّزهم: أتاحت موسيقى عازف البيانو فريديريك شوبان لهم إمكانية الشفاء والانفتاح. يعرّف الفيلم الوثائقيّ عن هؤلاء الثلاثة، بينما يستعدّ كلّ واحد منهم لتقديم عرض موسيقيّ لشوبان، في أماكنَ تربطهم بها ذكريات لا تُنتسى: معسكر اعتقال أوشفيتز، والحدود بين كوريا الشمالية وكوريا الجنوبية، وانفجاروسط المدينة في بيروت. يطرح الفيلم سؤالاً جوهريًّا : ما هو دور الفنّ في الشفاء الجماعيّ والفرديّ؟
Film Director
Joanna Kaczmarek is director and screenwriter, she graduates of theater studies at Film School K. Kieślowski, University of Silesia in Katowice and Theater Studies at the Theater Academy in Warsaw. She is co-founder and Board Member of the Association of Women Filmmakers, involved in social activities for women in the film industry.
Author of short films Men Prefer Blondes, I Don’t Know and she also directed documentaries Gośka gola!, Friends. As part of the Teatroteka series, she made a television show based on Agnieszka Wolny-Hamkało’s play Good Morning, We Will All Die. Her latest project is the Polish-Korean co-production Chopin. I’m Not Afraid of the Darkness.
Joanna Kaczmarek est réalisatrice et scénariste. Elle est diplômée de l’école de cinéma K. Kieślowski, de l’université de Silésie à Katowice et de l’Académie de théâtre de Varsovie. Elle est par ailleurs cofondatrice et membre du conseil d’administration de l’Association des femmes cinéastes, qui participe à des activités sociales pour les femmes dans l’industrie cinématographique.
Auteur des courts métrages Men Prefer Blondes et I Don’t Know, elle a également réalisé les documentaires Gośka gola ! et Friends. Dans le cadre de la série Teatroteka, elle a réalisé une émission de télévision basée sur la pièce d’Agnieszka Wolny-Hamkało Good Morning, We Will All Die. Son dernier projet est la coproduction polono-coréenne Chopin. I’m Not Afraid of the Darkness.
يوانا كاتشمار مخرجة وسيناريست. حائزة على دبلوم من كلية كريستوف كيشلوفسكي للعلوم السينمائية في جامعة سيليزي في كاتوفيتشي ومن أكاديمية العلوم المسرحية في وارسو. كما أنها عضو مؤسس في مجلس إدارة جمعية السينمائيات الذي يشارك في الأنشطة الاجتماعية للنساء في صناعة السينما.
وهي مؤلفة الفيلم القصير الرجال يفضلون الشقراوات و لا أدري، كما أنها أخرجت الوثائقي !alog aksoG و sdneirF. وفي إطار سلسلة تياتروتيكا، أخرجت حلقة تلفزيونية مستوحاة من معزوفة أغنيسكا فولني هامكاوا صباح الخير، سنموت جميعاً. ومشروعها الأخير هو المشاركة في إنتاج مشترك بولوني كوري بعنوان شوبان. لا أخاف العتمة.

Alain Andrea is a Doctor of Pharmacy who graduated from Saint Joseph University of Beirut. He specializes in molecular genetics research and is the author of several scientific publications on immuno-oncology and gene therapy. Dr. Andrea studied piano performance at the National Conservatory of Music in Lebanon, and developed his critical thinking in the arts and music under the guidance of prominent musical figures of the 20th and 21st centuries. He is a music critic in the French-speaking Lebanese press, and is known for more than a hundred articles featured in Lebanon or abroad.
Alain Andrea est docteur en pharmacie de l’Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth. Spécialisé dans la recherche en génétique moléculaire, il est l’auteur de plusieurs publications scientifiques consacrées au domaine de l’immuno-oncologie et de la thérapie génique. Pianiste de formation au Conservatoire national supérieur de musique du Liban, Dr. Andrea a développé sa pensée critique dans les arts et la musique auprès de grandes figures musicales des XXe et XXIe siècles ; il est critique musical dans la presse francophone libanaise, et a à son actif plus d’une centaine d’articles publiés au Liban ou à l’étranger.
آلان أندريا هو دكتور في الصيدلة من جامعة القديس يوسف في بيروت. متخصّص في البحث في علم الوراثة الجزيئي، وهو صاحب العديد من المنشورات العلمية في مجال علم المناعة السّرطاني والعلاج الجيني. تعلّم الدكتور أندريا العزف على البيانو في المعهد الوطني العالي للموسيقى في لبنان وقام بتطوير فكره النقدي في مجال الفنون والموسيقى تحت إشراف شخصيات موسيقيّة بارزة من القرنين العشرين والواحد والعشرين. هو ناقد موسيقي في الصحافة اللبنانيّة الناطقة باللغة الفرنسية، ولديه أكثر من مائة مقال نُشر في لبنان أو في الخارج.
